As automotive companies move toward an electric future, drivers naturally have a lot of questions. These questions typically include, is an electric vehicle right for me? Are they as effective as full gasoline-powered engines? And what's the difference between a Hybrid and a PHEV? So today, we are here to answer that last question for you and give you some insight into the types of hybrid vehicles we have on our lot. We hope that when you are done reading, you will agree that getting a new hybrid or electric vehicle is right for you and your family!

Difference Between a PHEV and Hybrid Vehicles

The term PHEV stands for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, while Hybrid is a more conventional hybrid electric vehicle. The most significant difference is how each vehicle uses its batteries to power the engine. With a traditional hybrid vehicle, the battery is charged by several different things, including the gasoline engine and regenerative braking. Meanwhile, the electric motor provides additional power to assist the engine when the engine requires it. If you're charging the battery, the vehicle can't be plugged in, and usually, the battery capacity is smaller than that of a PHEV.

Battery Capacity of a PHEV and Hybrid

With a PHEV vehicle, the battery is more extensive and can be very quickly charged by plugging the vehicle into an electrical outlet or by charging at one of the many stations that you will find throughout the country. This allows the vehicle to run solely on electric power for a certain amount of time, usually between 20 to 50 miles, before the gasoline engine turns on and takes you the rest of the way. Of course, the gasoline engine can also charge the battery as needed, as it would in a regular hybrid vehicle. Due to the larger battery capacity and ability to be charged by simply plugging in your vehicle, PHEVs can provide a longer electric-only driving range and higher fuel efficiency than some hybrid vehicles. Both hybrid and PHEV vehicles require little maintenance, including the battery, as you can easily replace your vehicle's battery at little or no cost to you.

Jeep 4xe's and Pacifica PHEV

Jeep has two 4xe vehicles on the market, known as the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee 4xe. The Wrangler 4xe comes standard with a base turbocharged four-cylinder which pairs with a battery pack and two electric motors that ends up generating a solid 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. This engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission that provides a smooth ride. In addition, the Wrangler 4xe gets up to 22 miles of all-electric range, which is one of the best in the class, and once your battery is drained, you will be switched to a gasoline-powered engine. The Grand Cherokee 4xe also uses a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a battery pack and two electric motors if you want something a little larger. The result is 275 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.

Should I Get a Hybrid or PHEV?

If you are trying to decide on what type of vehicle you want to get, you need to consider your driving habits, priorities, and what type of vehicle is realistic for you. For example, if you don't live somewhere where you can install a charger and don't have access to a charger elsewhere, it might not be practical for you to get a plug-in hybrid. For drivers who have to drive long distances, you will have to stop and recharge often to continue using electric power, which will require more planning than putting gas in a full hybrid. However, if environmental impact means something to you, you can consider the trade-off acceptable. Finally, depending on your hybrid use, you can choose between car insurance for pleasure against commuting.
