Electric vehicles continue to become increasingly popular, and with their popularity comes an abundance of charging stations. Here in Texas, we are among the leaders in charging station locations. With all of the electric vehicles out on the road, many drivers will be going to these charging stations, which means that those who drive electric vehicles will need to know the proper etiquette at these stations. Below we have come up with a couple of tips to abide by as you charge your vehicle at one of these stations. Once you are done reading these tips, be sure to check out our complete Jeep 4xe and Hornet R/T inventory here on our website!Â
Don't Hog the EV Charger
Once your electric vehicle has been fully charged, move it as soon as possible so others can use the charging station. It's considerate to unplug your vehicle and move it even if you are not fully charged as long as you have around an 80% charge or enough to get to where you are going. Also, you should never park in a charging spot if you don't need to charge, as EV charging spots are reserved for electric vehicles that need to charge. Never park in these spots if you don't need to charge, as it will take up the space for someone who needs it. Charging your vehicle and moving on when it is finished will help keep things moving so every driver can use the charger.Â
Never Unplug Someone Else
Unplugging someone else's car is never okay, even if you badly need the charging space. If you pull in and find the charging lot is full, find another one or wait until a space becomes available. When you do get to use the charging station, make sure your vehicle isn't blocking other electric vehicles from accessing the charging station. If the station has designated parking spots, park only in those spots if you need to charge and not if you plan to park your vehicle. One of the most common complaints of EV drivers is that gasoline-powered vehicles have parked in charging spots when they need to charge their vehicles. So if you are driving a gasoline-powered car, never park in a charging spot under any circumstances.Â
Keep an Eye of Time Limits
Some charging stations may have time limits on how long you can leave your vehicle there. Ensure you know these limits and move your vehicle as needed to avoid overstaying your welcome and irritating other drivers who may need to use the charging station. In addition, while your car is charging, ensure you are nearby and watching it. Leaving your vehicle unattended for an extended period can be seen as rude and may prevent others from using the station. If you have to leave your vehicle for an extended period, be sure to leave a note on your windshield so you can let other drivers know that you will be right back. Keep in mind that you can keep an eye on how your vehicle is charging by using specific applications such as ChargePoint.Â
Be Respectful of Other EV Drivers
As with many other shared things, you must ensure that you are mindful of others and respecting their time. In addition, you need to be efficient when charging and never take up any more time than you need to. Another thing you need to keep in mind is that there are some EVs that can charge faster than others, so if you notice that there are other people that need to use the charging station and you have an electric vehicle that charges quickly, ask other drivers if they want to use the charger first. Finally, if you know you will need to charge your car, plan and ensure a charging station is available on your route. If you travel long distances, plan your route with charging stations in mind and schedule stops when needed.Â
