Is the Wrangler 4xe Off-Road Capable?
Learn More from Gillman Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram!
The Jeep Wrangler's off-road capability has been mentioned around the world, from the most rugged trails to coffee shops and around the dinner table. Since hybrid technology was introduced to the automotive industry more than 20 years ago, there have been doubts about the performance of hybrid vehicles. However, when Jeep entered the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle market with the Wrangler 4xe, the goal was to provide PHEV efficiency alongside Wrangler capability and performance. This task was completed phenomenally! Please continue reading below to learn more about the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and its off-road performance.
Jeep Wrangler 4xe Powertrain
A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) system uses a combination of gas and electric power like a hybrid but instead uses a rechargeable battery pack like a battery electric vehicle. The Wrangler 4xe employs a 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack, two electric motors, and a 2.0L turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. While providing 49 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe), the Wrangler 4xe achieves an impressive 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. It also gets a 370-mile total driving range on a full tank and full charge, along with an all-electric driving range of 21 miles on a full charge. Like any vehicle with electric power, torque is sent from the engine to the wheels immediately upon pressing the gas pedal. This is because, as long as the vehicle is running, electrons are always flowing and will be immediately available to power the wheels. Conversely, gas-powered engines require RPMs to build up in order to send full torque to the wheels. Off-roaders oftentimes come across water during their adventures. So one may wonder about safety from the mixture of electricity and water. Jeep thought of this and put the battery pack within a water-tight seal underneath the rear seat, sealed off from the elements below. Additionally, all electrical connections have a water-tight seal to prevent any water damage to any of the vehicle's electrical systems.Â
4x4 Capability of the Wrangler 4xe
For decades, the name Wrangler has been synonymous with off-road capability and is recognized and respected by off-road enthusiasts everywhere. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe builds on that legacy, taking the all-terrain capability to new heights with electric power. The name 4xe is a conjunction of four-by-four and electric, making the name four-by-electric. This is because, like the standard Wrangler, the Wrangler 4xe comes with a 4x4 drivetrain. Most of the Wrangler 4xe lineup features Selec-Trac full-time 4x4. Selec-Trac is continuously sensing road conditions and automatically making adjustments to which wheels are getting torque to maintain traction no matter where you take the Wrangler. Meanwhile, the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe exclusively employs Rock-Trac 4x4 for superior off-road capability. Learn more about the Rubicon and its off-roading technology below.Â
Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Information
As was mentioned above, the Wrangler Rubicon 4x4 uses Rock-Trac 4x4. When this system's two-speed transfer case is placed in 4-low, it provides a gear ratio of 4:1. This means that for every four revolutions of the transmission output shaft, the axles are turned once. This provides higher torque at low speeds, making it ideal for crawling over rocks and other rugged terrains. The Rubicon also uses electronic sway bar disconnect. At the push of a button, this allows drivers to unlink the front sway (stabilizer) bar to allow the front wheels to compress and drop further. This enhances wheel articulation to keep four wheels on the ground at all times, no matter how jagged the terrain becomes. Additionally, the Rubicon features locking front and rear differentials. Off-road capability depends on the vehicle's ability to send power to the correct wheels, which the differentials are responsible for. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe features electronic locking differentials. Locking differentials work like the normal differentials of a 4x4 system, sending power to the wheels with the most traction and limiting power to the wheels that are slipping. With the Rubicon, however, drivers can choose to lock the rear axle or both axles at the flip of a switch. By doing this, either the rear wheels or all four wheels will rotate at the same time to enhance traction and carry momentum up tough terrain. The Rubicon 4xe also features more skid plates than the rest of the lineup, FOX shock absorbers, 33-inch all-terrain tires, and more.
