Learn More from Gillman Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram!

Since its introduction to the Jeep lineup in 1993, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has shattered expectations and challenged the ideas of what an SUV should be. Throughout its rich history, the Grand Cherokee has evolved into one of the top-rated SUVs in its class, offering superior capability, vintage Jeep design cues, contemporary style, and advanced technology. When the Grand Cherokee 4xe was introduced in 2022, the game was changed with the arrival of the Grand Cherokee's first-ever plug-in hybrid powertrain. While these two impressive SUVs share much of the same DNA, they are just as different as they are alike. Here at Gillman Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, we'd like to give you a closer look at both models to help you choose which is right for you. Read below to learn more!

Power of the Jeep Grand Cherokee

The two-row Grand Cherokee offers one standard engine option. That is the Pentastar 3.6L V6 engine, delivering 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the Grand Cherokee L is available 5.7L HEMI V8, which delivers 375 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, while the Pentastar engine is still standard. While rear-wheel drive is standard, the Grand Cherokee is eligible for three of Jeep's most trusted 4x4 systems, Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II with a rear electronic limited-slip differential. First, Quadra-Trac I runs in four-high at all times using a torque split of 48% to the front wheels and 52% to the rear wheels, providing optimal traction no matter the weather or road surface. Meanwhile, Quadra-Trac II is also available. This swaps the single-speed transfer case out for a two-speed one that can switch between 4-HI and 4-LO mode depending on the traction. Using a network of sensors and a brake-lock differential, the system can detect a loss of traction and automatically transfer up to 100% of available power to the axle with the most traction. Finally, Quadra-Drive II features a rear electronic limited-slip differential, allowing it to send up to 100% of torque to a single rear wheel to eliminate a loss of traction.

How is the Grand Cherokee 4xe Powered?

The Grand Cherokee 4xe uses a 2.0L turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine underneath the hood. This engine can be seen as a backup power supply for the electric vehicle powertrain that includes one electric motor at the front of the engine in place of the traditional Grand Cherokee's alternator and another electric motor taking the place of the Grand Cherokee's torque converter inside the transmission. These electric motors are powered by a 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack recharged by an external power source using a Level 1 or Level 2 EV charging cord. The PHEV power of the 4xe system gives the Grand Cherokee 4xe an impressive 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, all while providing spectacular fuel efficiency to the tune of 56 MPGe. Additionally, the Grand Cherokee can be driven up to 470 miles with a full tank of gas and a fully-charged battery and up to 25 miles in all-electric mode with a full charge. The name 4xe is derived from the phrase four-by-electric. This is because all Grand Cherokee 4xe models come standard with 4x4 in the form of either Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, or Quadra-Drive II.

What Are Some Design Features of the Grand Cherokee?

Since its introduction, style, comfort, and convenience have been the focal point of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. That legacy continues to this day with its unique design, high-quality materials, and advanced technology. The Grand Cherokee is available in Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve. On the outside, the Grand Cherokee features modern amenities like LED lighting, 17-inch alloy wheels, and power-adjustable side mirrors while integrating vintage Jeep style with a wide seven-slot grille and a distinct character line down the sides, creating a silhouette on the side profile. Inside, the Grand Cherokee offers premium cloth seating, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, dual-zone automatic climate control, and more. Opting for a higher Grand Cherokee trim level gets you things like 20- or 21-inch alloy wheels, LED fog lights, a panoramic sunroof, five-color ambient LED interior lighting, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, and more.

How Does the Grand Cherokee 4xe Stand Out?

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is available in the Base trim level, which uses the traditional Limited trim as its platform, Overland, Trailhawk, Summit, and Summit Reserve. While many of the features remain the same, the Grand Cherokee 4xe offers noticeable differences to set itself apart from the traditional model. For example, many accents on the 4xe models are colored Electric Blue, for obvious reasons. These accents include the 'e' badge on the charging port door, the 4xe badge on the trunk lid, the tow hooks on the Overland and Trailhawk trims, and the interior upholstery stitching. Another thing that stands out in the Grand Cherokee 4xe lineup is the now-exclusive Trailhawk trim. Formerly available for both the gas and hybrid Grand Cherokee models, the Trailhawk is now exclusive to the 4xe lineup, boasting Jeep's coveted 'Trail Rated 4x4' badge. It earned this badge with Quadra-Drive II with an electronic limited-slip rear differential, electronic sway-bar disconnect, Quadra-Lift air suspension, all-terrain tires, and a list of other exclusive off-roading features. The Trailhawk sets itself apart with a black anti-glare hood decal with an Electric Blue 'Trailhawk' inscription on the side.
